Normalization of the speed regime on the roads of Ukraine
Abstract
A brief overview of the causes of road accidents due to the fault of drivers was conducted. Almost a third of such accidents are related to non-observance of a safe speed regime, in particular, exceeding the safe or established speed limit. The relationship between an increase in vehicle speed and an increase in the number of road accidents is examined.
Considered domestic regulatory documents for compliance with the speed limit on the roads and streets of settlements in Ukraine, namely the Rules of the road and State building codes. It was found that on Ukrainian roads, the permissible maximum speed does not exceed 130 km/h, and in urban areas - 50 km/h.
A review of speed limits in other countries showed that similar speed limits are in place on autobahns and in urban areas. Furthermore, the possibility of lowering the maximum speed of cars on city streets to 30 km/h is being considered.
Road safety and the global automotive industry are not standing aside. The management of "VOLVO Cars" believes that the manufacturer has the right or even an obligation to install speed limiters (180 km/h) on cars in order to balance the level of safety and customer preferences. After crossing a certain mark on the speedometer, the car's safety systems and road infrastructure are unable to prevent serious or fatal injuries in the event of a road accident.
